How much is your rent? $300? Other than that your income is $0? Your rent usually is based on your income if you have no income your rent should be reduced, I think they have to still charge like $25/$50 in my state I’m in PA. So basically they just paid your rent you made no extra $$ of that? How did they find out your grandparents were giving you that? Bank statements? I’m in housing (HUD). I don’t think you’ll go to jail it was a legit misunderstanding, it’s not like you were working a full time job making over min wage a few hundred a week & didn’t report it. So after the $300 for pay for your rent your back to $0? What would they have done different? They couldn’t increase your rent based on your grandparents income, you were only given $300 & your rent was $300. Technically your rent should’ve went down because you had no income you lost your income. Please don’t worry don’t stress yourself out. We’re all humans we all make mistakes & I would’ve thought that would’ve been considered a gift also because it wasn’t earned income you didn’t work for it your relative gave it to you to pay your rent in hard times to HELP you, it was given to you as a gift to me that’s a gift. But I get it in their eyes it’s not i don’t think a judge will toss you behind bars for such a thing it was an honest mistake. Please don’t panic I know that feeling you’ll looses sleep, stress etc. since you lost your income, let them know that you lost your income because shouldn’t share rent go down since you have no income? Then just report your grandparents paying your rent that’s it no more. How do they know it was for rent and not for food for a month? I mean I know it can get deep though they start asking you how do you pay for this & how do you pay for that? I guess for the food you could just tell them somebody buys you food they don’t give you money for food, but they buy you food every month. You got this chin up hun! But if you have public defenders in your area, I suggest you get a public defender ASAP though just for extra security unless you have money for an attorney which I doubt you do. I’ve had positive defenders and they’re not all that bad. I was gonna say the most they would probably do is make you pay back but what would u pay back if your only income was $300 which was your rent amount it be different if you had a job you didn’t report.
