Section 8 housing is a cruel joke?

We like to pretend that we have programs to help poor people find housing. We don’t. We haven’t had any in a long time. The wait lists are so long, measured in years, the systems are so backlogged that the program is essentially on hold. And now Herr Drumpf and his apartheid friend are laying off all the HUD workers. I’ve been waitlisted since 2021. I’m currently 74. I’ll probably be residing in a cemetery before they get back to me.

You’re probably right. You might never hear from them. Have you tried elderly housing, subsidized housing too?

I don’t know if you’ve considered it, but if you’re willing to move, waitlists in some areas are shorter than in others for housing (elderly, subsidized). And if you live in the same town as a waitlist, you’ll move up the list faster too. I don’t know how people ever get section 8 with those long waitlists, unless they go into a shelter and receive it from there.

That was my situation and I was in the shelter for 22 months in Dallas County. They have to verify disability or they will refer you to another program called rapid housing

I'm on a bunch of lists and I'll be homeless in August. I'm 60 and disabled.

It’s very bizzare, in some areas it’s 10-15 year wait, in others it can be less than a year from what I’ve seen

I’m 63F and endured 17 months of homelessness during Covid bc I was told that is the ONLY WAY to get Section 8 housing. A woman pulled a knife on me bc I snored in a shelter room with 8 bunk beds. I stayed in 2 different homeless motels, 2 shelters and endured numerous humiliations and demeaning situations bc it is the ONLY way. Sad but true. I now have a small 1 BR w my 2 cats and I treasure it.

Not to mention whenever you get a pay raise they raise your rent so they keep you stuck in the same situation. Theres no way to better yourself.

I understand your frustration. My aunt in the 1980's filed for public housing after the state took her home (and gave her NO MONEY for compensation)!!!! To this day she has NEVER been called and has long ago passed. They never even followed up by letter in all these years!

I understand your frustration, and anger too well. I'm sorry about your struggles. All I can tell you is to hold on a little bit longer.

I can't remember who told me, but I was told that it takes 5 years, and it was true for me. I live in California.

My children and I were homeless, and they didn't move us to the front of the line. Nothing moved us, just our time.

Hang in there. It will all work out in the end.
