I would recommend that you go to the Salvation Army, but you may have to stay there for awhile before they give you a voucher.
Sadly, there is some truth in Christopher’s ignorant and mean-spirited answer. Organizations like the Salvation Army make a lot of money off the bodies of homeless people - their main priority is to keep their jobs, not to house society’s most vulnerable citizens. If you are not suffering from PTSD or another mental illness, and can find some type of work, they might be able to give you a voucher within the 90 days you are allowed to stay (this stay can be extended if you are working with a case manager at the shelter).
Contrary to what Christopher believes, there are few programs for homeless women & children despite the fact that homeless women with children make up 37% of the homeless population. The number of people living at less than half the poverty rate has tripled since 1976 (thanks to the wonderful “trickle down” theory of economics).
It’s people like Christopher who helped to create this problem, and who perpetuate the delusion that there are “tons of food stamps” and “plenty of shelters” for women & children. There are far more shelters for men than for women, despite the fact that women with children make up almost half the homeless population.
“Charitable” organizations have failed to make any real dent in the atrocity of homelessness. We must come together as a society to help our homeless neighbors (and yes, that means taxing the greedy to help the needy).
Housing, like healthcare, is a Human Right not a luxury item. No human being should have to tap dance for donors to get what they need to survive.
You deserve a home, no matter what your circumstances, because you deserve to remain healthy and alive. Please know that you are not alone. Many wonderful people have fallen through the cracks of our brutal society, and that is a stain on all of us.
