Besides Section 8, what other low-income housing programs are available in the US right now? I'm trying to figure out all my options.
Hi everyone, I’m currently looking for affordable housing and trying to understand all the programs that might help. I already know about Section 8, but the waitlists in my area (Florida) are insanely long, and sometimes they’re not even open. I’ve heard there are other programs besides Section 8, but I’m honestly not sure what they are or how they work.
I’m on a fixed income due to disability and don’t have kids, so I’m not looking for anything big just a safe, stable place I can afford. I keep hearing about things like public housing, project-based vouchers, or LIHTC, but I don’t really understand the difference between any of these.
Can someone explain what low-income housing options are out there besides Section 8, especially any that are available in 2025? And are there any programs that are easier to get into or have shorter waitlists?
I’d also love to know if there are local programs run by cities, counties, churches, or nonprofits that help people like me get into affordable housing without waiting forever. If anyone has experience or advice, I’d really appreciate it. I’m just trying to explore every possible option.
