Isn’t it part of the lease agreement that everything in the apartment has to be in working condition? My landlord still hasn’t fixed my broken air conditioner and I’m disabled don’t they legally have to take care of it?
I live in the U.S. and I’ve been renting the same apartment for a while now. Last summer, right at the end of the season, my air conditioner went out. It never got fixed before the weather cooled off, so I let it slide. But now it’s hot again and I’ve been reaching out to management about it for the past couple of weeks. Every time I call, they say someone will come out to fix it “tomorrow” or “by the end of the week,” but no one ever shows up.
I’m disabled and I have health problems that get worse in the heat. This isn’t just a comfort issue, it’s a health and safety concern for me. I thought landlords were legally required to make sure basic things like air conditioning (especially in hot climates) were working. Isn’t this part of our lease agreement?
What are my rights here? Can I file a complaint or get someone involved legally? I’ve been more than patient, but I’m starting to feel like they’re ignoring me because they think I won’t do anything about it.
Has anyone else dealt with this? What steps can I take to make them actually fix the air conditioner, especially considering my medical condition?
