Not reporting my child’s bank account?

I have my 19 year old daughter living in subsidized housing with me for about 3 months now. Her case worker started giving her checks. It turns out she’s entitled to benefits because she aged out of the foster care system before I could find us stable housing. She doesn’t have a checking account. It’s been a month and the checks still haven’t been cashed because I’m not sure if I should report her for income to public housing or not. I want her to be able to build a nest egg with that money. How is she supposed to save up enough to move out if most of her check has to go to supplementing the increased rent. My question is, what is the likelihood that we would even get caught if we chose not to report it. Maybe it would be better if she eats the fee and just cashed it at Walmart and we can put the money in my safety deposit box or something. What do you guys think?

you need to report it, or you are going to get hit with fraud.

your kid isnt a kid. shes an adult. while under 18 her money didn't effect your housing, but now shes a legal adult In the household.

Section 8 will know. they will find out. your kid is currently paying Social Security, State, and federal taxes out of their checks, cashed or not. stop withholding her money and let her cash her checks. she can use that money to start getting out on her own

they are likewise using your address as their home address.

if you dont report it, youre going to be dinged for fraud and kicked off section 8 for up to 5 years.

It sounds like household income no matter how she cashes it. If you report it your rent should go up to 1/3 of the total household income. If you don’t report it and get caught you both get permanently banned from section 8 and evicted.

Yes you must report your daughter is living with you and must report her income. She must pay 30% of her income!!!
