Is it possible to live in a modern apartment with a section 8 voucher?

I recently got my voucher and have heard many horror stories of it only being able to be used in bad neighborhoods/old buildings.. is there anyone on this sub living in a very nice apartment building with it? With lots of amenities, such as washer/dryer, pool, gym, etc

I think as long as the rent amount is under the voucher limit , should be okay.

Yes indeed. Especially if you have good credit. You can live in "luxury" apartments, New construction, ect. Everything is so cheaply made nowadays, tho. It's not always as nice as it may seem from the outside looking in.

I've learned after being denied by two "luxury" complexes that you have to have good credit a lot of these buildings treat all tenants the same regardless of whether you have section 8 or not so if you don't have the required credit score then you won't be accepted

What credit score do you think you’d have to be for one of these units? I may look into it when I end my lease, I love my property manager but the building is old and in rough shape and I took anything I could find in the moment

Yes. It has just happened to me. 748 units in a luxury building with concierge service and every amenity you can imagine. I was on a waitlist for this. I had to jump through hoops and it was incredibly hard but I got in. Out of 748 apartments only 12 of us are on section 8. All the rest pay $2600 to $3500 a month for a one bedroom apartment working jobs that pay well. Only 12 of us are poor. Lol. No one knows which 12 apartments or residents are section 8 voucher holders. It’ll take a while for me to not think I’m dreaming. I’m on my best behavior. Believe me. I’m not going to do anything to mess this up. I’m so grateful.

Just curious, do you have to pay utilities ? The housing authority doesn’t cover utilities in this county, so when I asked about BMR in these luxury apartments , it will be substantially more since I have to pay for 250 for utilities , whereas in the tax-credit building I only pay electric on top of 30% of my income (new construction, no amenities)

Yes, I just applied for one!! It all depends on your housing market and the allowable rent rates. Your housing agent should give you a breakdown of how much rent is allowed by zip code or area. Good luck!

i live in a section 8 apartment that i consider pretty luxurious in a wealthy area of boston. the building is very nice and quiet and there’s a community garden in the backyard. it doesn’t have any amenities but it’s a massive one bedroom with 13 foot ceilings and huge windows. it’s my dream apartment and i’m very grateful to live here because i would never be able to have my own place otherwise

As long as the voucher covers it..sure, but it never does if you want luxury. In my humble experience, it is only the lower echelon for housing vouchers here in CO. You just might be lucky though.
