Should I go ahead and give my 60-day notice to current apartment?

I am in the process of moving with my voucher, in the same Housing Authority area. Moving to a newer & nicer place.

I have applications in at 2 places. One is my clear #1 choice, but I would be happy at either one.

It could take a couple weeks to get all the paperwork done.

My current apartment requires 60-days notice to move out.

Should I go ahead and give notice now?

What would happen if I don’t get my new place in time?

The only thing I can see that would be a problem is my credit score. It’s around 650. Currently only one credit card with 100% on-time payments. All my old debt has been paid in full or discharged.

EDIT: the Housing Authority did grant me an extension on my voucher until August 13th.

My current apartment is not a low-income property, most residents pay full rent. I just have my voucher. The lease clearly states a 60-day notice is required. So if I want my #1 choice new apartment, it is available July 15th, I would have to give notice by May 14th. But I just applied last week, what if it takes too long?

These 60 day notices really upset me - is there a legitimate reason for them?

The only reason I can find is trying to force you to never move.

They want to minimize the time without tenants and not getting rent.

They have to have your notice in order to start offering it to new tenants.

Did you apply for funds from agencies that can help with moving costs. I know it's hard to do that when you have too much. Apply for rental assistance

Don’t give your notice without finding another place because if you don’t find another place and they don’t give you an extension, you lose section 8 forever

Hold off for now. Giving notice without a confirmed place is like jumping without knowing if there’s a net. Lock in the new apartment first, then give notice with confidence.
